Honorary Doctorates are surely not the highest academic degree. In fact, it is a symbolic award conferred to distinguished personalities. The personalities who have made an excellent contribution that is worth emulating. When I say distinguished personalities, it does not mean that they are from some other world. It means the years of committed, distinguished efforts of common individuals. Honorary doctorate, surely, is a great source of inspiration for future generations that such a award is not confined to academic corridors. It puts a seal on the dedicated efforts of an individual which are tirelessly committed for the betterment of this civilised world.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Though in this civilised world, the Honorary Doctorate <\/a>carries an Immense Symbolic Weight, yet it raises eyebrows about credibility and fairness, particularly when it is awarded to celebrities and political figures whose achievements may not align with the spirit of academic excellence. Also, some have the misunderstanding that sometimes it is used as a tool for publicity rather than genuine recognition. Through this blog, we will explore the famous personalities who have received the honorary doctorate, highlighting the significance of the honour. I am pretty sure that the readers will gain a deep understanding of why universities award doctorates, how recipients perceive them, and what society can learn from this time-tested tradition. Ultimately, this blog will inspire many, just as it did for me, from the deeds of famous people who received the honorary doctorate.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is an Honorary doctorate and its Eligibility? <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Many national and international universities offer honorary doctorates in India, too. Certain institutes and universities are doing a humongous job in honouring the length of working professionals by providing course modules that ensure a doctorate award. Dunster Business School, Switzerland, offers an honorary Doctorate in Business Administration. Whereas, Florida University of Science and Management offers an honorary doctorate in science and management disciplines. The honorary doctorate awarded by these two universities is very much recognised in India.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Criteria<\/strong> For Honorary Doctorates<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

An Honorary PhD or Doctorate has its roots in the Latin words \u2018honorary causa\u2019, which means \u2018for the sake of\u2019. Universities generally confer an Honorary PhD or Doctor of Letters to eminent personalities whose contributions align with their values, vision, and mission. The other criteria that undergo rigorous scrutiny before awarding the honorary are their outstanding achievement, ethical and moral righteousness, sustained contribution, and lasting impact of the contribution on society and humanity at large.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It takes sustained and continued efforts of fine-tuning with the relevant field to be known to the world. The world surely understands who is who? And the factors as mentioned above are a few ones those on which the testimony of hard work of the famous personality is tested. There are many criteria on which the honorary doctorate can be awarded. But considering the length of the blog, I will touch upon four factors as discussed above to present before you the nationally and internationally famous people who received the much-coveted doctorate. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

He was the first President of South Africa who fought against apartheid. His life was a journey from oppression to global statesmanship. He made contributions which are rooted in equality, reconciliation, and human dignity. Nelson Mandela was awarded with Numerous Honorary Doctorate<\/a>. Each award not only acknowledged his personal achievement but also honoured the collective struggle for freedom.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

4. Dr APJ Abdul Kalam<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

RK Laxman was India\u2019s most cherished political cartoonist. He was also the empathetic chronicler of everyday life. The University of Mysore honoured him with an honorary doctorate for his creative brilliance and his capacity to capture public life. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

He could not attend the award ceremony owing to health issues. So, the university went the extra mile to honour him at his workplace, so that he can receive it in person. Though he did not deliver any speech, the emotion echoed the spirit of RK Laxman\u2019s life long work – honouring every unspoken story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Recipients’ Perception of Honorary Doctorate<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

When an individual is honoured with a symbolic \u2018Doctorate\u2019 in recognition of his\/ her hard work and unwavering dedication, it surely holds a significance greater than any other accolade.
